Well spring has arrived at our new home and that means time to pay attention to the yard. I came across these concrete forms at Lowe's and thought they would look great in front of our gate. When my husband took the project and ran with it...well...I couldn't stop him right?
Step #1: We decided where to place the concrete and then removed the grass.
Step #2: We then placed the form to plan out the design and where the concrete should be placed.
Step #3: Mix a bag of concrete with water.
Step #4: We added some dark color to match our existing rocks. One bottle is enough for two bags of concrete.
Step #5: Place the concrete inside the frame and make sure there aren't any air pockets.
Step #6: Smooth it and put extra concrete back into the bucket.
Step #7: After lifting the frame, round the stones so it resembles a natural looking rock.
And there you have it...beautiful cobble stone! (i did help a little bit)
seriously so cute! can i have some of your motivation????
ReplyDeletelove it!
I love how it turned out. funny thing is I bought one of those forms years ago and it is still in my garage. My hubbo will never do it, so I'm gonna have to try this myself. thanks for the inspiration and demonstration!
ReplyDeleteSeriously! If I hadn't seen your name first I would have thought that I had already left this message...lol! I bought one of those forms many years ago and it is still in my "basement", and I would also like to try it, although I also have a concrete mixer called ODJOB, made by Scepter. You just add water into a round bucket- like enclosed container with your cement mixture and roll it. It states you can use a 30 or 60 lb bag of the premix and roll it for 30 seconds.Has anyone ever tried this? Well you have inspired me also and I have the perfect place to start.L lost my husband to a heart attack 15 years ago and it has been sitting in my basement all this time....thank you!
DeleteYes, Alvalee my brother gave me his ODJOB this pass weekend to do the same project (make a patio). He used it for his driveway and it works perfect.
DeleteWhere can I buy one of those forms?

Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAh-mazing! You guys did a beautiful job on your back-yard!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this. We bought some molds last spring and didn't get a chance to do our pathway. I'm hoping we are able to squeeze it in before it gets to hot this year. Thanks for the photo's. We're going to put soil in between the blocks and add grass seed.

Would you mind doing a price breakdown? Id love to do this and am wondering how much it would cost.
ReplyDeleteHi. I having been reading that the molds use 1 bag of concrete per mold. Is that what you used? Seems like it would be less. Planning on tackling this project this summer. Thx.
ReplyDeleteA small bag of Quickcrete might cover only one mold, depending on how large the mold is. I buy the small bags, the large ones are 90 pounds and too heavy to move about easily. One small bag of the stuff makes about two dozen single stepping stones that are large enough for an average foot, and each one is approximately 1 1/4" thick, after grout (I decorate the stepping stones with broken shells, clear crafting glass pieces, etc.)
DeleteOh I've definately gotta do this! I've got a couple of places that I wanted to add some concrete! So ready to do this one!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!! Just a quick question..... how many of those forms would you get with one bag of cement>?
ReplyDeleteLOVE it! Looks fantastic!!! I REALLY want to try this in our back yard!

How many bags of concrete did it take for you to do that one area in your yard?
ReplyDeleteI did this in my back yard. I have a savings tip on the cement coloring. I bought the black powder instead of the liquid color. I had thick rubber gloves on. Instead of adding the color in the cement batch this is what I did: after pulling the mold off either shake some black powder over the molded cement or put some in your hand. Then lightly rub your hand over the the wet cobblestones and it covers the part you want to see not all the cement your not going to. It's lasted 6 years now not fading. LOVE IT! Makes it alot cheaper since you don't have to buy all the coloring. Those molds are so easy!
ReplyDeleteOne bag=One mold
ReplyDeletethe mold is like 2'x 2'. Also if you come to a tight area where you have to turn or like above you dont quite have enough room for another whole mold, just push your mold down in the area and just dig into the last molded area it just changes the shape of a few but keeps it all cemetrical (sp:?). It still turns out perfect.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the name of the mold you used for this project?
ReplyDeleteI love it! I've been researching stamped concrete for our backyard. I wish I could use this method, but I think we'd still be at it NEXT spring because the space is quite large.
ReplyDeleteHow long did you need to leave the form in place before removing it to make the next one? It looks great!
ReplyDeleteWhere to buy this product
ReplyDeleteFound this idea on Pinterest and LOVE it! Thank you for sharing. I found the mold at Lowe's Home Improvement and the cost was about $16.00. It is available online if you do not have Lowe's nearby. The mold is made by Quikrete. We just finished up our first mold. Instead of adding the coloring to the cement we sprayed it onto the cement after we removed the mold.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for this information

camie,
ReplyDeletewe are considering doing our kitchen countertops with concrete and wanted to dye them black. noticed you used quikrete charcoal dye. it seems like once dry, it is NOT black. could you help me avoid a huge mistake and confirm? thanks, darlene

ReplyDeleteLove it! How are the concrete "pavers" holding up?
ReplyDeletevery nice... thank you for the idea!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Pinned it!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! Just a couple of questions. Did you put anything between the 'stones' to hold them in place - such as sand or additional concrete? Do you know how they hold up in ice and snow?
ReplyDeleteThanks again for sharing this idea, Camie.

ReplyDeleteI was just going to put in a stepping stone path for my landlord at the house I am renting, but this is so much nicer! Any chance you could share the approximate cost of the project so I can see if my landlord will go for it? I have no idea how to figure out the amount of cement to use per foot - that would be all I need really. Also - could I borrow your hubby for the labor?! :)

ReplyDeleteLooks awesome! I'm wanting to put in a walkway from our stamped concrete patio to go around the house and I'm thinking this just might be the way to go once I check out the costs. I would be removing the grass like you did.. my question is did you put any gravel or sand down after you removed the grass?? Or did you just begin putting the mold over the dirt? I love how this turned out!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if yout took time to answer the questions.
ReplyDeleteI have answered but it is through email. I am sorry if you haven't been getting responses. \
ReplyDeleteTo answer we did just place the concrete down on the dirt. we did place some moss in-between the stones. The cost is around 100.00 including the concrete frame. We just did our whole patio in it and will be posting that this summer. Thanks for all of your responses. xoxo
Hi there, how did your patio turn out? I'm thinking of paving our two gravel patios using your idea.
DeleteYes, please. I would like to see how your patio turned out. Thank you!

That came out great! I was just wondering how you managed to fill in the non-square area where the project met your existing loose stones. We have an angled apron area we need to fill and I was trying to figure out how to do it with the form. Did you just fill the spaces you needed in the mold and leave the overlap empty?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Did it cost you a100 for the whole patio or just that little area you did
ReplyDeleteDid it cost you a100 for the whole patio or just that little area you did
ReplyDeleteI just LOVE this idea. Our yard needs a facelift and if I can do what you did I will be a happy girl. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the cobblesrone frame from??
ReplyDeleteWe bought the frame from Lowes.
ReplyDeleteThe concrete is roughly $3 or less for an 80# bag. The charcoal color is between $6 and $8 a bottle and does 2 80# bags of concrete. You will need a trowel to go across the top to settle the rocks down off the top. In my opinion that's the hardest part. Also a little tip i learned from doing it is the bag of cement calls for 3/4 gallons of water. That wasn't quite enough to make the cement into a firm mud. Add a little more at a time to get it wet enough. Also mix your color with the water before putting in the cement.
ReplyDeletelove this!! brilliant idea, just pinned it! Thanks Camie for sharing :)

Can you put sand or small Stone between the holes? Any idea what would be nicest?
ReplyDeleteHello. I was curious about how the cement stones are holding up. I would like to do this for a walkway from my house to my fence gate and was wondering if they held up ok after being walked on a lot. I noticed you had one that cracked. Was it easy to repair? Your project turned out great and I would love to do this to my yard as well!
ReplyDeleteFour years later and it still looks the same.
DeleteHow long after you get the concrete in the mold can you remove the form?
DeleteWonderful! Can you please tell me where I can buy the frame. I want to do that project in my backyard. :) thanks

ReplyDeleteI came across these concrete forms at Lowe's and thought they would ... concretemoldsforms.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThis project needs a proper base in order to stand the test of time without cracking. In other similar projects I used a mixture of well-tamped stone dust and gravel commonly known as 43a. At least two inches, wet down the base material and then tamp it with either a hand tamper or a machine tamper.
ReplyDeleteCrazy...but four years later it looks the same.
DeleteDid you make your own form or where did you get it?
ReplyDeleteWe bought it at Lowes.
